Lot 5354
Constantius II, as Caesar, 324-337. Follis (Silvered bronze, 20 mm, 3.17 g, 12 h), Constantinopolis, 326. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II to left. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS / CONS Campgate with two turrets and no doors; above, star; in field to left, A. Ramskold, Aborted production (2020), p. 222, fig. 4b (this coin) RIC 10. Light pitting and with minor weakness on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The RIC 10 coins for Constantius II constitute two groups. The group with a small bust is twice as large as the group with a large bust. Ramskold believes that the large bust type was introduced when the production for Crispus was cut short. The reverse die for this coin was also used with a Crispus obverse die, indicating that the reverse dies functioned as a die pool.
